Residents of Mubano Village in Masaka Sector, Kicukiro District yesterday joined Athanase Kamondo, 91, to celeberate his new home.

Kamondo said that he clocked 90 years, he lost all hope of ever owning a home.

"I cannot believe that from today, I own a house despite my old age. It’s hard to express my feelings about it but I am really grateful,” Kamondo said.

He explained that prior to getting the house, life had been difficult for him and his family as he has no income to afford rent.

The father of four thanked local authorities, particularly the district that financed the construction of the house.

In April this year, as Prime Minister, Bernard Makuza, was touring the district,  Kamondo asked for a house.

The Prime Minister forwarded the request to the district which promised to build the house in two months.

The district mayor, Jules Ndamage, handed over the keys to Kamondo and said the district is determined to help the needy.

"This year, we will build 25 more houses that will be given out to the most vulnerable in the district,” Ndamage said.

At the same event, Valerie Kayitesi, a single mother of two children, also received a house.

"My husband abandoned me with the children after getting another wife, but among others issues, rent has always been a burden to me,” Kayitesi narrated.
