GASABO - Authorities in Gasabo District of Kigali City, yesterday, announced a budget of over Rwf 5.1 billion to support various development projects in the district.The district Mayor Willy Ndizeye, disclosed this while addressing journalists on the district’s action plan for the financial year 2011/2012 and the achievements in the previous year held.

Ndizeye announced that about Rwf 1.1 billion would be spent on road construction, including tarmacking, rehabilitation and construction of new feeder roads connecting the rural parts of the district to main roads.
The district also intends to refurbish the Kabuga bus terminal to the tune of Rwf 400m, extend electricity and clean water to various parts of the district at a cost of over Rwf 916 and also build one health centre in Remera Sector as well as five health posts.
"We will construct 140 houses for the vulnerable, including Genocide survivors (Rwf 300m) and give financial support to four women cooperatives (Rwf 36m),” Ndizeye explained.
During the anti-Nyakatsi campaign, Gasabo which has the biggest part of the rural residents in Kigali City constructed 1,418 houses out of the targeted 1,474.
Currently, the district has about 200 vulnerable families in need of shelter.
Meanwhile, the district intends to spend about Rwf 30m to support 74 former street children who recently graduated at Iwawa Rehabilitation and Development Skills Centre, to start a cooperative society.
It currently accommodates about 21 former street children, who have no families. They are part of those who will benefit from the street children’s kitty.
One hundred families will get heifers under the one-cow-per-household program, according to the Mayor.
On the environment front, 500,000 trees will be planted and 3,000 hectares of land consolidated.
During the last fiscal year, district revenues increased by 39 percent to about Rwf 4.7 billion from Rwf 3.2 billion in the previous financial year. Ndizeye observed that the district targets to generate about Rwf 5.8 billion this year.
