Jean Baptiste Nizeyimana, who was shot twice in the thighs, said he was attacked at his shop, which was totally demolished during the incident.

"They were many in number but I couldn’t recognise them because it was very dark. They wanted to steal my motorcycle and all items in my shop,” said Nizeyimana.

The victim is currently undergoing treatment at Byumba Hospital.

Some of the area residents, who spoke to The New Times, said they heard the gunshots but could not intervene out of fear.
