KACYIRU - Frank Bizimungu, the police man who recently picked and handed over US$40,000 (about Rwf 24 million) at the Kigali International Airport, was yesterday promoted from the rank of constable to sergeant.

Due to his exceptional integrity, he was also honoured with a Police Exemplary Medal and promised a house, during an event that took place at the Police Headquarters in Kacyiru, Kigali.

Bizimungu works at the scanner section at the Kigali International Airport.

He saw a misplaced bag containing US$40,000, looked for the owner in vain before handing it over to authorities. It had been left behind by a British national.

The Minister of Security, Musa Fazil Harerimana, who presided over the event, urged other police officers to emulate Bizimungu and serve with honesty and integrity.

"Such noble actions not only show the integrity of the individual, but also build a good reputation for the nation,” the Minister said.

He commended Bizimungu for his honesty and told him and other police officers to carry on with such acts that will build careers.

Bizimungu was elated by the recognition.

"The rank I have been promoted to and the medal I received from the minister is motivation for me to work even harder, love my country and serve it faithfully,” Bizimungu said.

He advised his colleagues to execute their duties with honesty and disregard quick immoral gains that might tarnish their image and that of the institution they work for.

The Minister noted that it was not the first time police officers had shown their integrity, despite Bizimungu being the first to be officially rewarded.

"Some police officers have reported people who attempt to offer them bribes. We intend to start recognizing them for their sincerity and fight against corruption,” the minister stated.

He said this would motivate them to be persons of moral integrity and even reinforce the fight against corruption.
