NGOMA -  Fishing activities have resumed on Lake Sake in Ngoma District, after a one year suspension.

Fishing was banned by the government to allow newly planted tilapia species to mature.

At the official re-launch ceremony organised by the district authorities and fishery cooperatives over the weekend, fishermen were excited about the new prospects.

Francois Niyotwagira, the Mayor of Ngoma District, advised fishermen to professionalise their trade.

He pointed out that the lake provides great support to the district’s economy, adding that it also offers the population with a major source of food, income and employment.

"Fishing supports many people. The lake should be guarded jealously, to optimise its socio-economic benefits,” he said.

Niyotwagira further requested fishery cooperatives to protect the surrounding environment from destructive human encroachment.

Damascene Habimana, a fisherman, said that they were looking forward to a boost in trade as a result of the mature Tilapia.

"Fishing has helped us to improve our livelihoods significantly…we begin with a lot of enthusiasm and expect more profits with Tilapia. It is our duty to combat illegal fishing and trade…only acceptable nets will be allowed,” he said.

"Fishing will boost business in villages, so we are happy to see fishing resume,” Alfred Bakoramuki, 56, a resident of Sake Sector said.
