True freedom and happiness

If you are a teenager and are thinking a lot about your life, you’re normal. You’re even mostly right. You aren’t little girl or boy anymore. Your parents won’t run your life forever. You cannot go back to the way it was when you were tiny. But you are also in a crunch to figure out a positive way to go forward in life. Being your age is a rush to fill the desires of your heart. You might think that what you lack is freedom and that an escape from your parent’s ways is your key to wild happiness.

Right now Richard (my little cousin) hates it when anyone lays rules on him, but he especially resents her parent’s expectations. He wants control over what she does, when he does it, and who he does it with.

Some people think this is what it means to find happiness. But I think there is a better way to find the radically good life we long for.

Real freedom is knowing your God-given potential and using it. It comes from understanding what God designed for you to accomplish and then doing it. A fish can think, "I have got to be free, let me go live in the atmosphere” all he wants, but he still can’t breathe air and he’s not wise to try.

Unless you want to spend your last gasps flipping around on the floor, your happiness depends on finding wise ways to fulfill the desires of your heart.
