KARONGI- Congolese refugees based at the Kiziba camp in Karongi District are still battling with the reduced supply of food.According to Joseph Nkurikiyinka the refugees’ representative at the camp, the shortage of maize has lasted over a month.“Recently, the quality of the food we have been receiving is not good. We have been severely affected by the food shortage,” Nkurikiyinka said, adding that the refugees only receive beans and cooking oil.

Gozague Karagire, the camp Director said that measures are underway to contain the situation.
"Better quality food has been bought already and farmers’ cooperatives have promised to bring even more. There was a shortage of maize as a result of a poor agricultural season,” Karagire said.
He explained that harvests from the second agricultural season will resolve the crisis.
During a recent field visit, the new Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness Antoine Ruvebana, promised full commitment towards ending the food crisis.
Kiziba refugee camp is home to 18,000 Congolese refuges displaced due to the insurgency in the DR Congo.
