NYAGATARE-Livestock farmers in Nyagatare District have completed training with the aim of enhancing production of quality milk.

The training was conducted by Umutara Polytechnic University through its innovative program to enhance livestock production in the Eastern province.

Speaking to participants, the acting Rector of the university, Dr. Eugene Ndabaga, said that technology should go beyond computers and reach rural residents at the grassroots level.

"This project is mainly centred on training rural farmers to increase milk production,” he said.

According to the university officials, the project evaluates the current animal feed technologies as a basis to train farmers in modern farming technologies to increase milk production.

"This research project will be conducted as a basis to help farmers acquire skills on modern farming technologies,” said Dr. Francis Mbuza, the university’s dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Mbuza added that the training is the beginning of a series of intensive training sessions to help farmers improve natural pastures and dry season feeding practices as well as overcoming mineral deficiencies for dairy animals to increase milk production.

Speaking to The New Times, farmers said that the training will improve their well being.

"We were trained how to use modern technology to increase milk production. This will at the same time improve our welfare,” one of the farmers said.
