Editor,

I read, with sadness, the story in The New Times about the tragedy that struck in Jenda Sector in Nyabihu District, when a mudslide claimed the lives of three teenagers.

It is very sad that the three ladies became victims of Mother Nature in their quest to do something for themselves.

My view is that we need to be a little more vigilant in these times as the weather and the Earth are becoming increasingly unpredictable. We need to be cautious because disasters are always lurking.

A little bit of vigilance about the appropriateness of the soil would have saved the three girls.  It is easy to observe signs of weakness and cracks when conducting an excavation. Precautionary measures do not require necessarily specialists; the eye can do.

The tragic loss of Marie Claire Nzayikunda, 17, Nyirangabo Urayeneza, 19, and Pascaline Uwurukundo, 19, should serve as a lesson to everyone. Let’s all watch out!

To the deceased, rest in peace, and my deepest sympathies and prayers are with the bereaved families.
