Editor,

News that the Rwanda Revenue Authority (RRA), on Tuesday, awarded certificates of merit to exemplary taxpayers in the Eastern Province is encouraging, and the same gesture should be extended to other parts of the country.

Paying taxes on time is an obligation as it plays a leading role in the national development. It’s disgusting to hear that some people, especially traders, evade taxes yet  want to access better government services. As Rwandans, we must understand that it’s through meeting our tax obligations that we will guarantee our country’s long-term growth.

Recognizing exemplary taxpayers should be regular. I believe it will act as an incentive for many taxpayers.

It’s also good news to hear that majority of Rwandans have developed a positive attitude towards paying taxes, and doing so on time. Accountability and tax compliance is important for any nation.
