Rusizi District Mayor, Oscar Nzeyimana, has urged residents of Gitabi Sector to be vigilant following a spate of violent crimes that have rocked the area.

"Lately, there have been cases of extreme violence in this sector, yet the culprits are not yet known,” Nzeyimana said during a security meeting in the area yesterday.

According to security officials, the body of a 7-year old boy was recently discovered with a missing arm at the side of the road.

In another incident, a 15-year old boy went missing and his whereabouts are still unknown with many residents claiming he was murdered.

Nzeyimana called upon residents to act as watchdogs for each other and to report any cases of domestic violence to local authorities.

Addressing the meeting, several officials highlighted security as the cornerstone of development.

Residents vowed to report any insecurity threats to authorities and to implement community policing measures. They, however, partly blamed the current situation to the remoteness of the sector.

"This is a very isolated sector, far from others. People with bad intentions take advantage of its isolation,” said a resident.
