Rukundo eyes Olympic slot in Daegu

WHILE conceding that a podium finish at the upcoming World Athletics Championship in Daegu, South Korea would be tough, Sylvain Rukundo remained upbeat of hitting the 2012 London Olympic Games qualification mark.

The 5000m national champion has a personal best 13.41.00 but still needs to slash it down by 13 seconds to qualify for next year’s Olympics.

"It is every athlete’s dream to compete in the Olympics and I feel I’m very close to qualifying,” he said.

"I’m training hard and hope things will fall into place.”

In Daegu, Rukundo will be joined by two-time Olympian Epiphanie Nyirabarame who will also compete in the half marathon.

The athletics championship will be staged in Daegu Stadium which also hosted the 2002 Fifa World Cup, the 22nd Summer Universidad (2003), and the Colorful Daegu Pre-Championship Meeting, which has been held annually since 2005.The event will run from August 27 to September 4.
