The Rwanda Women Parliamentary Forum, yesterday, celebrated their 15th anniversary at a colourful even in the Parliamentary buildings, with several dignitaries from the region and globe in attendance.

The Rwandan Parliament consists of 56 per cent women - the highest level of women representation in the world and according to the latest UN women report the country also has the highest representation of women in the development of the country.

Historically, women were disadvantaged in several ways, and were considered inferior.

The government has changed this trend and women are treated the same as their male counterparts. This has not only enabled them to contribute remarkably to national development, but has also put them in positions of leadership, way beyond the minimum constitutional provisions.

Women have helped improve the national quality of life and the women spearheaded the fight against Gender Based Violence.

However, there is still more to be done.

There are women who are yet to realise their full potential and the efforts to sensitize the population on the role and capabilities of women should be increased.

The opportunities are immense, financial institutions have availed special packages for women, and the political will to support women empowerment is profuse, an asset that will see women ascend to even greater heights.
