Editor,

The insulting article against our President in issue No.24 of the Ishema newspaper published last week speaks volumes about our local journalists. Some journalists are highly reckless and never care about what the law says.

I think we are just lucky that we have a very tolerant government otherwise; such insulting stories should never find space in Africa.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Ishema newspaper management for apologising for the defamatory article against President Paul Kagame. Journalists ought to talk about issues, providing alternatives other than insulting people.

Ishema’s Managing Director, Fidele Gakire made the right move when he dismissed the baseless allegations that he had received death threats. Journalists should always be honest, credible and straightforward. The law must be followed and journalists should never violate the rule of law.

While this should set a precedence to newspaper proprietors to follow proper editorial procedures before publishing articles, they should not feign persecution or death threats when the law is applied.
