The Minister of Health, Dr Agnes Binangwaho, yesterday officially opened the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at King Faisal Hospital, Kigali.The HDU will be used for patients in a less critical condition than those in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

The Minister paid tribute to the hospital for providing medical services to more patients than before.
Dr. Alex Butera, the CEO of the hospital said that the new facility will help reduce the number of patients in the ICU and give room to those in very critical conditions.
"We get many patients, some of whom are in a more critical condition than others. With the HDU in place, those in a less critical condition can be attended to from there,” Butera said.
During her visit, the Minister also officially launched an oxygen plant which enables the hospital to manufacture oxygen as well as the uninterrupted power supply that ensures 24 hour power supply to critical areas such as the theatre, Neonatal, ICU and HDU.
Butera said that the hospital has an oxygen surplus as it manufactures 86 litres of the gas and only uses only 30 litres.
Joshua Rubambana, the Facility and Property Manager said the HDU cost Rwf60 million to set up. The oxygen plant cost over Rwf200m while the power supply facility cost Rwf259m.
