The Nyabarongo hydro electric power plant will be completed by February 2014,  the contractors -Angelique International Limited – disclosed yesterday.

The hydro power project which is, so far, the biggest in the country was scheduled to be completed in 2013, however, delays in the expropriation process forced the extension of the deadline.

Speaking to reporters after touring the power plant, yesterday, Colethe Ruhamya, the Minister of State Minister in charge of Energy and Water, commended the progress.

"There were some delays in the beginning because the people who were expropriated refused to relinquish the land before being paid but after getting their compensation, the project is progressing so fast,” she said.

She added that the government and the contractors have put in extra efforts to ensure that the power project is completed on the agreed time.

Upon completion, the project which is set to generate 28 megawatts of power is expected to cost US$110 million.

The Chief Project Officer Naresh Kapoor pledged to have the project completed by the agreed period.

"We are doing all our best to ensure that we complete the project in early 2014. We have finished diverting the Nyabarongo River and now we have started building the dam,” he said.
