Editor,

I wish to appeal to officials of transport association, Atraco and other stakeholders in the public transport sector, especially in the city to monitor on a daily basis the fares charged by operators.

It looks like some drivers and their conductors are fleecing passengers under the pretext of fuel price increase. Many passengers have often lamented about the practice but so far there has been no intervention.

I am therefore writing to appeal to relevant authorities to rise up to the occasion and straighten things up by setting reasonable and fixed fares known to all passengers. I recall RURA announcing that a kilometre costs Rwf19.

Imagine a taxi coming from Kacyiru or Kiseminti to Kimironko charging Rwf200, the same as someone from Nyabugogo! This is unwarranted.

Previously, passengers travelling to Kimironko have accused conductors of hiking fares. The Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) should intervene.
