South Africa’s superstar, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, is scheduled to stage a live performance at the AfricaSan 3 conference slated to kick off tomorrow in Kigali.

Chaka Chaka is a Lifebuoy Africa hand-washing ambassador and she will be in Kigali to perform at the high level conference that will be attended by 35 African ministers charged with sanitation and hygiene.

"She will be in Kigali to urge participants at the continental gathering to create more initiatives to help mothers in Africa keep their children healthy,” reads a statement from Unilever Sub-Saharan Africa.

 Latest developments indicate that other prominent delegates expected to attend the conference include the Unilever Global Social Mission Director, Dr. Myriam Sidibe, CEO of Water and Sanitation Programme Sam Parker and Unilever Sub-Saharan Africa Marketing Director, Juliet Ziswa.

Also expected to attend is the Mayor of Monrovia, Liberia, Mary Broh.

Unilever, a co-sponsor of the AfricaSan 3 Conference, is currently implementing a mass scale hand-washing behavioural change program across Africa that uses multiple channels of mass media, school programs, mothers program and packaging to encourage people to wash their hands.

The mass scale is aimed at realising the MDG 4 that seeks to reduce child mortality by two thirds by 2015.

"Unilever will be seeking to enroll more partners from the conference to amplify the mass scale hand washing programs throughout Africa. So far, Unilever has similar programs running in South Africa, Kenya and Nigeria,” reads the statement.

During the conference, it is also expected that the nominees of the first hand-washing champion awards will be announced.

About 800 participants and 15 media houses have registered to take part in the conference.

AfricaSan 3 is part of a movement towards achieving the MDGs on sanitation and Hygiene.

Rwanda was chosen to host the conference because it is among the four countries in sub-Saharan Africa on track to meet this particular MDG. Others are Angola, Botswana, and South Africa.
