GICUMBI - Gicumbi District authorities were Thursday urged to fill vacant positions set aside for people living with disabilities at all levels.

Rulindo-Gicumbi zone coordinator, J. Dieu Rutatika Rutatika disclosed that 17 out of 21 sectors in the district were found lacking committees for the disabled.

He was speaking at a meeting which drew district local leaders.

The meeting was organised by the National Electoral Commission meant to brief the local authorities on the upcoming Senate elections.

"Gicumbi has over 200 people living with disabilities and these need people to represent them down from the grassroots. This should be emphasised while filling other vacant posts,” said Rutatika.

"Due to the history of the country, many people with disabilities did not attain better education. So, advocacy should be done for them.” 

Speaking to the local leaders, Mayor Bonane Nyangenzi, called on them to pay attention to security matters during elections.

He also urged the local leaders to fully establish the authentic number of residents in their respective sectors.

"You should know very well your communities so that we don’t have people who want to cause insecurity especially during the upcoming elections,” said Nyangezi.

The Senate elections are scheduled to be held on August 26-27.
