LOCAL athletes will have their eyes on the 2012 London Games slots when they compete in next month’s IAAF World Championship in Daegu, Korea.

Sylvain Rukundo and Epiphanie Nyirabarame will represent Rwanda and national athletics team head coach Emmanuel Murenzi hinted that the pair’s selection was based on their experience.

"They have the experience to compete at the top level and we hope they will do us (Rwanda) proud in Korea,” he said.

Last week, Rukundo set a new personal best time in 5000m after clocking 13 minutes and 41seconds in Italy.

Murenzi now expects two-time Olympian Nyirabarame to perform even better in next week’s World Military Games in Brazil.

In Daegu, Rukundo will compete in both 5000m and 10000m while Nyirabarame will compete in the half marathon category.

The year’s IAAF World Championships, scheduled for August 27 to September 4, will be held in Daegu Stadium, one of the venues for the 2002 Fifa World Cup, the 22nd Summer Universidad (2003), and the Colorful Daegu Pre-Championship Meeting, which has been held annually since 2005.
