RUSIZI -Eleven victims of Tuesday’s grenade blast in Rusizi District have been discharged from Gihundwe Hospital, while six others who sustained serious injuries were transferred to Butare Hospital.

Eight of the victims are still admitted at Gihundwe Hospital.

Speaking at a security meeting in Rusizi yesterday, the Inspector General of Police, Emmanuel Gasana, disclosed that the government had taken care of the hospital bills of all the grenade victims.

He re-assured that the police is closely following up on people behind the   attacks in the country.

 "Any country that is undergoing tremendous development like Rwanda is likely to face opposition from detractors. Rwandans should join hands to fight such attacks,” said Gasana.

After visiting the victims the RDF Chief of Staff, Land Forces, Lt Gen. Caesar Kayizari, urged the public to play an active role in ensuring security.

"Work, development and dignity are every Rwandan’s right and nothing can be achieved where there is insecurity. The grenade attacks are an impediment to development,” Kayizari said.

He added that after 17 years, Rwanda has worked hard towards ensuring security; hence the reason why Rwandans should uphold security as a priority by fighting any negative forces and doctrines.

The army chief assured the residents that the culprits would be brought to book.

Col. Dan Munyuza, who was until yesterday the Head of Military Intelligence, assured Rusizi residents about their readiness to track people involved in the grenade attacks countrywide.

"More than 50 of people involved in grenade attacks have been arrested. We are using concerted efforts to address this issue,” said Munyuza, who was redeployed as head of External Security.

A survivor, only identified as Haruna said that the scene of the crime was dark, a reason that might have been favourable for the perpetrators to plant the grenade.

Some of the measures taken by the district authorities to ensure security include, installing security lights, demolishing deserted old houses and registering all visitors in their respective cells.

The Rusizi sistrict mayor, Oscar Nzeyimana urged the residents to be vigilant.
