Burera-A17-year old school girl accused of carrying out an abortion was, yesterday, formally charged at Musanze Intermediate Court.

The Senior Four student at CPM-Mitire Education Centre in Burera District, was arrested last week and detained at Rugarama Police Station.

According to prosecution, the teenager, who hails from Rwamagana District, after realising that she was pregnant, asked for permission to return home citing family problems but returned to school complaining of a stomach ache. When she was taken to a health centre, it was reported that the abortion had developed complications.

However, the girl’s lawyer, Juvenal Muhire, argued that it was a miscarriage.

"There is no evidence that she aborted. There is no medical proof to that effect,” Muhire, pleaded. "I ask the court to release this young girl to enable her return to school.’’

The president of the Musanze Intermediate Court, Isabella Riziki, who is presiding over the case will, tomorrow, decide whether to grant her bail.
