Editor,

I am not surprised that Rwanda has a poor reading culture, given her colonial past.

Countries with an English speaking background have an edge over their Francophone counterparts when it comes to reading.

Our entry into the Commonwealth comes with benefits which include the possibility of improving the reading culture. It is important to read, as it is the only way to gain knowledge and information.

In this day and age of the TV, computer and internet, reading has been made much easier. Even books can be accessed online. A reading culture should be propagated among the young ones.

Our children need to have basic knowledge on different issues around the world including current affairs, environment and health. This will give them a competitive edge.

We look forward to the opening of the first ever public library in our country.

Happy reading
