Rwandan nationals and friends residing in South Africa, over the weekend, gathered in Cape Town to celebrate the 17th anniversary of the Rwandan liberation.

The event, that was officiated by Claude Nikobisanzwe, the First Secretary at the Rwanda High Commission in South Africa.

In his speech, Nikobisanzwe highlighted the importance of the Liberation Day and listed the country’s achievements in the areas of peace and security, economy, education, health among others.

"Rwanda overcame extreme security challenges in the past years and we are now on the front line to contribute to the security of other countries by sending peacekeepers across the globe to avert insecurity,” he said.

Nikobisanzwe urged Rwandans to be proud of their resilience in seeking home-grown solutions to the toughest challenges they face.

He encouraged members of Rwandan Diaspora to double their efforts in playing a role in the development of their country, by taking advantage of various available options including  banking in Rwanda,  venturing in real estate and contributing towards the Bye Bye Nyakatsi campaign. 

During the celebrations, guests were treated to an assortment of traditional Rwandan music.
