Gov’t plans Amahoro Stadium expansion

AMAHORO national stadium is set to be expanded according to the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture Protais Mitali.The decision was reached during last week’s cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro.According to Mitali, technicians from the Ministry of Infrastructure have been tasked to mastermind plans to expand the stadium to about 50,000. The stadium currently seats 30,000.

AMAHORO national stadium is set to be expanded according to the Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture Protais Mitali.

The decision was reached during last week’s cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro.

According to Mitali, technicians from the Ministry of Infrastructure have been tasked to mastermind plans to expand the stadium to about 50,000. The stadium currently seats 30,000.

"The plan is to carry out the expansion in phases because the stadium will also be used for other activities,” Mitali noted.The move is timely as Rwanda prepares to host the 2016 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).

CHAN is a competition reserved for players featuring in their respective domestic leagues. The first edition was held in 2009 in Ivory Coast while Sudan staged this year’s edition.

Following Caf’s move to switch the tournament to odd years, CHAN will now be held in even years.

The government is also up grading and expanding Huye stadium to a capacity of10.000 from 5000.  Muhanga stadium will also be expanded to accommodate 15,000.
