GATSIBO - Gatsibo district leaders have stepped up a campaign to uproot genocide ideology in schools.

According to Mayor, Ambrose Ruboneza, the campaign started from Groupe Scolaire de Muhura where local leaders say that  cases of genocide ideology among student are  rampant.

Groupe Scolaire de Muhura and College APECOME de Gakenke in Kiramuluzi sector were in 2007 cited by the parliamentary committee as schools with cases of what was termed widespread genocide ideology.

The mayor said, all teachers at Groupe Scolaire de Muhura were replaced by new ones as part of the efforts to stem the vice.

"We transferred all the teaching staff at the school to various other schools. We brought in new faces after we realised that teachers were  the architects in spreading genocide ideology among students,” Ruboneza said.

"We also intend to hold a series of dialogue  with students, staff and parents in a concerted bid to stem the ideology  from spreading while striving to  inspire  students to adopt the culture of patriotism.”

Gilbert Nsengiyumva, a senior four student at GS Muhura said that since the district transferred teachers, cases of genocide ideology have drastically reduced.

"We experienced severe cases of genocide ideology where Tutsi students were threatened to be killed. But when the district decided to change the teaching staff, everything is turning normal,” he said.
