KARONGI- Local government officials in Rwamagana District, yesterday, concluded a two-day study tour of Karongi District to learn from the latter’s impressive performance in the health sector policies and implementation strategies.

Led by Yvonne Muhongayire, the Vice Mayor in charge of social affairs, the team acknowledged that Karongi had lessons to offer because of its outstanding performance in the health sector.

"Being the best in health practices, such as Mutuelle de Santé, we thought that our district could borrow a leaf from Karongi,” Muhongayire said.

The visitors also toured health centres, where family planning methods such as voluntary vasectomy are offered.

Silas Rudasingwa, the district health officer in Karongi noted that coordination among community health workers to promote house-to-house sensitisation, had led to tremendous progress.

"We have a health system strengthening team which has helped to effectively coordinate all the health related services,” he said.

Rutayisire attributed most of the success to community health workers who attend to people at the grassroots level.

According to Sebastian Hakizimana, the vice mayor in charge of economic development in Karongi, the health sector is considered a priority.

"If the health department adopts good service delivery, then other sectors will be successful,” he said.
