Editor,

Allow me to express my appreciation to the team of doctors from the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) who over the weekend treated 3,580 dental and eye patients in Gisagara District, Southern Province.

The team of 50 medics also conducted voluntary HIV/AIDS counselling and testing (VCT) and advised patients on various health matters, including hygiene and sanitation.

As a Rwandan, I feel proud because we have a very professional force which does not only participate in the development process but also gets closer to the people it serves.

Normally, in African countries, the military is seen as brutal and inhuman considering the many conflicts the continent has faced over the years. In my opinion, RDF stands out as a people’s force, a force that has a human face.

Such activities like participating in community work, treating patients during the army week, building schools and carrying out agricultural activities make RDF a very unique army.

On top of such activities, the RDF never forgets its main mission to protect the country. Peacekeeping activities have also made RDF known across the globe.

Like any other Rwandan, I feel proud every time I see our men and women in uniform. We are proud of you. Long live RDF, long live Rwanda.
