HUYE - Butare University Teaching Hospital (CHUB) on Monday donated six Friesian cows to vulnerable survivors Genocide in Rusatira sector, Huye District, as a way of helping them improve their social wellbeing.

A medical doctor at the event donated a seventh cow to a woman after her songs about the cows deeply touched him.

According to Dr André Musemakweli, the hospital’s Director, the donation is part of activities to mark the 17th commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi.

Speaking during the event, Musemakweli noted that supporting survivors and uplifting their social welfare was a responsibility of every individual.

"We must remember the horrific times we passed through but we should also not forget to assist those left with nothing, those whose relatives were killed and property destroyed”, he remarked.

"This country was destroyed by its own population. It is the responsibility of everyone of us to rebuild it”.

Maria Mukandenzi, a Genocide survivor living in Nyabusunzu Village, Kimuna cell, expressed gratitude to the hospital employees. She noted that the cow she received would help her boost her agricultural production.

"Now that I have a source for manure, I hope to see my production increase significantly”, she noted.
