Editor,

I have been following positive developments happening in the Ministry of Agriculture, regarding the move to diversify our exports.

It is really good news to see that the ministry is discouraging farmers from depending on coffee or tea alone, but also think about alternatives like horticulture.

We have been relying on the two exports for many years and it’s time we try other products that will increase the foreign exchange.

For instance, horticulture industry offers considerable potential which may contribute significantly to poverty reduction and economic development, if adequately exploited.

Rwanda has a strong competitive base that hinges on her comparative advantages such as favorable climate, soils, abundant water resource that can be exploited to produce quality and competitive horticulture products on regional and international levels. The ministry is on the right track.
