FIFA yesterday hailed Rwanda for their involvement in the on-going Fifa U-17 World Cup in Mexico.
The world football governing body’s Secretary General Jerome Valcke commended the local football body (Ferwafa) for making the most of the newly-set up Amavubi academy.
80% of the team that is featuring at the World Cup is a product of the academy which was inaugurated in April 2005 by Fifa President Joseph Sepp Blatter.
The academy started operations two years ago with 30 players selected across the country.
Marcel Nzarora, Michel Rusheshangoga, Celestin Ndayishimiye, Emery Bayisenge, Eric Nsabimana, Robert Ndatimana, Justin Mico, Kabes Hategekimana and Innocent Mugabo are all products of the academy.
Africa’s big guns Nigeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Morocco and Tunisia all failed to qualify for the World Cup.
