Rwanda’s health insurance policies have reaped innumerable benefits which have not only been witnessed by Rwandans, but have also attracted world attention

Nothing guarantees sustainable development than a healthy population, and that is what Mutuelle de Sante, the community health insurance scheme, with over 90 percent now subscribed, is all about.

The success registered by Mutuelle de Sante and RAMA, another government policy that initially aimed at offering health insurance cover to civil servants, and has now opened up to the private sector, has encouraged entrepreneurs who now regard this area as a business opportunity.

It is through these initiatives that different insurance companies have introduced packages which have in turn earned them profits, but most importantly, the working class and the peasants, have been principle beneficiaries of the policies.

The story of these initiatives and many more in Rwanda demonstrate the fact that home grown policies are the most viable solutions to the challenges that the African people face.
