GATSIBO – A group of former students of Muhura Secondary School in Gatsibo District, have stepped up efforts to uproot the Genocide ideology that has been rampant at the school.

12 former students under the patronage of Light of Hope Association, made the pledge while meeting with students and the school’s administration to discuss measures to curb the ideology at the school.

Antoine Mutsinzi, the head of the school’s Old Students Association, said one of their priorities was to uproot the ideology and redeem the school’s image.

"This school had become infamous in recent years for Genocide ideology cases among students and teachers. Our main contribution is to make sure that no more similar cases are registered here,” Mutsinzi  said.

He added that they hoped to achieve their goal by conducting dialogue and debates on unity and reconciliation, patriotism and impact of Genocide on society.

Some students used to circulate leaflets containing hate messages against Genocide survivors.

The school’s headteacher, Sylvestre Ngarambe Nsengimana, challenged the students’ association to extend their mobilisation campaign to parents, saying the latter pass on the ideology to their children.

"A big percentage of students who exhibit the Genocide ideology get it from their parents. You should extend this campaign to parents,” he said.

He called on students to foster peace for harmonious co-existence.

In an interview, Alice Gerardine Niyonsaba, the school’s Head Girl, warned that that kind of ideology and other divisive tendencies destroy the students’ future.
