Mukaruliza attends ANC veteran’s burial

The Minister of East African Community, Monique Mukaruliza, on Saturday, attended the burial of Africa National Congress (ANC) veteran, Albertina Sisulu.

The Minister of East African Community, Monique Mukaruliza, on Saturday, attended the burial of Africa National Congress (ANC) veteran, Albertina Sisulu.

Sisulu, who was accorded a State funeral, category one, given to national heroes, died on June 2 at her home in Johannesburg at the age of 92.

She is the widow of the first full-time Secretary General of the ANC, Walter Sisulu, who spent 25 years in jail alongside Nelson Mandela.

Sisulu, a nurse and a midwife by profession, joined the ANC Women’s League in the 1940s and was a leader of the campaign to boycott ‘Bantu education’ imposed on African children by the Apartheid regime.

The State funeral held at Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg was also attended by foreign dignitaries including Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, the Prime Minister of Lesotho Pakalitha Mosisili and Essam Sharaf, the Prime Minister of Egypt.

Others included Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, Former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda, and the Namibian National Assembly Speaker, Theo-Ben Gurirab.
