THE inaugural national swimming championship gets underway today with twelve clubs in contention at Nyarutarama Sports Club.

The president of the national swimming federation Samuel Kinimba Ufitimana told Times Sport yesterday that the championship will be staged in four phases.

Some of the clubs in contention include Rivera High School, Cool waters, CSK, Mug Serena, Dolphins, Cercle Sportif, Zenith, National University of Rwanda (NUR), Town swimming club and Groupe Scolaire de Butare.

The championship is also expected to be a selection ground for the national team that will compete at the world swimming championship in Shanghai-China from July 16-31.
Early this year, 25 coaches underwent a Level - one training clinic at La Palisse Nyandungu.

The clinic was conducted by Joshua Neuloh, a training instructor at Loughborough training center in Britain.
