MUHANGA- Staff of the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) yesterday donated over Rwf 4.5million to Kagitarama Genocide survivors in Muhanga District.

The funds were handed over by François Régis Gatarayiha, the acting Director of RURA, who was accompanied by the organisation’s staff and district officials.

The kitty, pooled from income of RURA staff, is meant to assist the survivors to start up an ICT project, and other micro projects as requested by the Kagitarama Survivor’s Association of Child-headed household.

"The donation is aimed at enabling survivors meet their development goals, which are in line with the country’s vision of promoting use of information technology,” Gatarayiha said.

RURA had previously funded a power installation project for the survivors. The ICT project is meant to enhance self sustainability.

Celestine Ibambasi, the head of the survivors said that 12 of the 130 survivors are university graduates and the project funding would enable them create jobs and generate incomes.

"RURA has been very supportive and we are grateful for the continued support. The project will enable the beneficiaries to acquire ICT skills, train others, and generate income,” Ibambasi said.

District officials and representatives of umbrella organisation of survivors (Ibuka) in Muhanga, hailed RURA for its charity act and urged the survivors to be responsible citizens by using the donations appropriately.

Innocent Rutsibuka, the District Ibuka Chairman, said: "We are proud of the fact that there are very many good-hearted people who are willing to support, which is a sign of hope and restoration of a nation and human dignity.”

The RURA delegation also visited the Kabgayi Genocide Memorial site to honour over 36.000 genocide victims laid there.
