Rwanda has a variety of music and dance which range from acts that express epics commemorating excellence and bravery, humorous lyrics to hunting root.

This kind of celebrations is called ‘igitaramo Nyarwanda’. Music and dance plays an important role in the traditions of Rwanda.

In Rwandan traditions, the purpose of the ‘igitaramo Nyarwanda’ is to get together at leisure to uplift the well-being and national image of Rwandan people.

During the igitaramo, members share their experiences, reinforce each other, celebrate their descent while impacting the community on various platforms, and engage the community.

"I remember when I was 18 years of age, we had fun through ibitaramo. It was a time to share experiences that bonded us together in an atmosphere of truth, support and harmony,” says Vincent Rugwizangonga, a 65-year-old resident of Kabuga, in Gasabo district.

"Gitaramo is more of music and dancing, but an experience of the heart, mind, and spirit. It evokes self-discovery, spiritual renewal, joy for life, and a deep sense of community,” Rugwizangonga explains.

Igitaramo Nyarwanda, are events aimed at uplifting and preserving African indigenous knowledge, cultural history, heritage and customary values among Rwandans. Today ritually every day or night there is more than one group networking around bars and hotels.
