KICUKIRO-Head teachers of schools in Kicukiro District have been challenged to protect students from drug abuse.

The call was made yesterday by the management of the district in collaboration with security authorities.

"As teachers and school leaders, protecting students from drugs is one of your prime responsibilities because drugs are a major threat to the security of any nation,” Chief Supt Rogers Rutikanga from the National Police said.

He also challenged them to report cases of students who use drugs in their schools.

Participants said that they will carry out similar security meetings in all schools across the district adding that they will also organise various sports competitions aimed at sensitizing against drugs.

Richard Manzi a teacher from Kagarama Secondary School who attended the meeting said: "I think each school should lay its own strategies of fighting drugs, depending on its geographical location”.

He noted that there is need to train students about the effects and disadvantages of taking drugs through forming ant-drugs associations in schools in the country.

According to the Police Spokesperson, Supt Theos Badege, 12 cases of drug abuse were registered among schools in Kicukiro District last month.
