KIGALI - Judges from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) yesterday arrived in the country to evaluate the testimonies of witnesses in the case of genocide suspect, Grégoire Ndahimana.

Ndahimana is the former Mayor of Kivumu Commune, now in the Western Province.

He was arrested in 2009 in North Kivu, DRC and is accused of being instrumental in the killing of Tutsi who had sought refuge at the Nyange Catholic Parish.

Ndahimana is charged with Genocide or in the alternative, Complicity in Genocide and Extermination, as a crime against humanity.

Areas to be visited include; the Nyange parish, the offices of the former Kivumu Commune, areas adjacent to the parish, including fields belonging to the parish in 1994, Nyange trading centre, the Virgin Mary statue and former pharmacy of businessman Gaspard Kanyarukiga.

Ndahimana is accused of ordering the massacres of Tutsis at the parish between April 14 and 16, 1994, jointly with other officials, including a parish priest, Athanase Seromba, currently serving a life sentence for his involvement.

Others are businessman Gaspard Kanyarukiga, who was sentenced to 30 years for related offences and Fulgence Kayishema, former Judicial Police Inspector of the commune, who is still at large.

More than 2,000 Tutsi refugees were allegedly killed at the church.
