NYAMASHEKE- Nyamasheke District, over the weekend, rewarded the five best sectors in the implementation of performance pledges during the 2010-2011financial year. 

The sectors were Kirimbi, in fifth position with 89.9 percent, Kagano, 90.4 percent, Karengera, 90.9 percent, Bushenge 91 percent and Cyato in the top position with 91.5 percent.

The assessment considered achievements of the 2010-2011 performance targets and innovativeness.

The executive board’s abilities to plan, monitor, implement and evaluate various government programmes,  like the eradication of thatched houses and the One-cow-per-family programme were also considered.

The rewards ranged from office file/book shelves, office furniture, laptops and accessories like printers. All five sectors also received certificates while the first received a trophy.

"Nothing led to our triumph other than encouraging residents to actively participate in all developmental programs. Cyato was one of the poorest sectors, where VUP, operated, but harmony has taken us to where we are,” said Patrice Nkinzingabo, Executive Secretary, Cyato Sector.

VUP is Vision 2020-Umurenge Programme aimed at eradicating poverty in the country’s poorest sectors.

Some of the achievements that led Cyato to the top include cultivation of 100 hectares of tea, putting up of 506 new houses to replace thatched houses of vulnerable people, and a high percentage of residents responding to government initiatives.

According to the district mayor, the selection exercise was an intricate task.

The district has a total of 15 sectors.

"The last sector attained 70 percent. That shows that they are all hardworking and worth rewarding,” said Jean Baptiste Habyarimana, Nyamasheke Mayor.

He also hughlighted the district’s achievements in the past year, indicating improved performance in most aspects, among them agriculture, good governance, tourism and tax collection. 

The building of a canopy walk in Nyungwe National Park that has attracted many tourists and the production of a documentary film on Nyamasheke District were cited among the latest achievements.

Two big markets were also constructed while the price of coffee stabilised.
