Neat dreadlocks are trendy.

Dreadlocks are known the world over and are getting more and more popular. Some people do it for style while others believe it is part of a culture. One thing for sure is that dreadlocks turn heads wherever they appear.

Gone are the days when girls where the only ones who could have their hair plaited. Nowadays we see cornrow wearing boys walking the streets and looking perfectly fine.  But what about the belief that is guys with plaited hair, or worse dreadlocks, are up to no good?

Have we not heard stories of guys being rejected in corporate offices and other jobs because they had dreadlocks of course with the exception of being a film, TV, radio, or music star?

Have we not heard of boys being disowned by their own parents simply because he wanted to look like Bob Marley?

Yes we have heard all about it and now we want to know why this happens. Some people think that in this day and age, anything goes but it is shocking just how much a hairstyle can be stereotyped.

For example, some parents still won’t approve of their daughters marrying Rastafarians or dreadlocked men for that matter.

You can take your boyfriend home so sure he is the sweetest guy and that the family will certainly love him but one look at his dreadlocks sends your father reaching out for his shot gun!

It is in fact sad but true that some people think dreadlocks mean trouble!

They tend to assume that every dreadlock wearing man loves the ‘herb’ and that of course to them means he is confused half the time and completely insane the other half.

There is no convincing of any kind that good, in whichever manner it comes in, can be achieved by such a man.

Yes, quite a number of them actually do enjoy the herb commonly known as marijuana. Does that mean that they all do? I have personally met some of these guys who have never so much as even smoked a cigarette let alone weed.

Besides should it matter if he wears them in a sane and decent way? Now maybe that is where the problem is. Some dreadlocks look so awful that you can’t help but wonder if they’ve ever been washed. No matter how good looking you are, ugly dreadlocks will kill your look.

If you are going to insist on wearing what I call the most beautiful thing since God gave me life, then please, make your dreadlocks neat.

If they are neat, clean and held back in a way that doesn’t let them sway in front of your face, people could take you seriously.

Dirty dreads are a turnoff and no one in their right mind can hire you or let you date their daughter for that matter looking like you could throw stones around any second no matter how brilliant you might actually be.

You could be a bank manager or CEO of some great firm with neat dreadlocks. It wouldn’t matter that you had them if they always looked their best. But if yours are in desperate need of a scissor then don’t look shocked when someone looks at you like he would a mad man!

Appearances speak volumes and hair is part of those appearances. Shabby dreads do suggest you are up to no good, a mad man probably pretending to be sane or a diseased lumpen seeing as they smell like the soap that was never made.
