Editor,

The move by Kigali City Council to put up permanent structures to accommodate hawkers shows how caring the leadership of the council is in maintaining order and cleanliness in our city. The move, I believe will help hawkers engage their clients in a more regular and organised manner.

Permanent premises would not only improve business among hawkers but would also earn trust from the clients.

Complaints of harassment by law enforcers to ensure law and order, would also be a thing of the past.

The move would equally benefit the general public. Recently, a hawker knocked down an expectant mother while running away from the city authorities.

Businesses cannot operate efficiently as hawkers either obstruct the shops or sell the same products to the same customers, which is a disadvantage to business people who pay taxes.

I am requesting that other districts across the country to do likewise to forestall chaos associated with hawking.
