RUBAVU - The youth in Rubavu district have contributed to the cattle stocking drive, Girinka.

During last Saturday’s community work in the district, they handed Rwf 1.5 million to Edward Kalisa, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Sports and Culture.

The PS had joined them for the monthly communal work (Umuganda).

Through Girinka initiative, communities nominate needy beneficiaries who receive a cow to improve their nutrition and provide manure to increase yields in their farms.

"The contribution by the youth is very important as they take part in government programs and participate in the development agenda of the country,” stated Kalisa.

He encouraged the youth in other parts of the country to emulate their Rubavu counterparts.

"The most important thing is not the money, but to understand the importance of the idea, then people can give as much as they can afford,” added Kalisa.

Jean Baptiste Ingabire, a student who contributed to the project, said they conceived the idea after realising that there were many poor people in their community.

"As the youth, we are the future generation so we want to take part in transforming our country.”
