GERVAIS Hakizimana’s involvement in this year’s World Athletics Championship in Daegu, South Korea and next year’s London Olympic Games hangs in a balance after falling short of the minimum qualification time in yesterday’s Pézenas national meet in Southern France.

The national steeplechase (3000m) champion claimed silver after clocking 8 minutes, 39 seconds and five micro-seconds but was still six seconds and five micro-seconds above the minimum qualification time of eight minutes and 33 seconds (8:33:00).

France’s Amgul Lahcen won the race (8:38:03) while his compatriot Pepiot Valentin settled for bronze after returning 8:39:24.

Hakizimana is expected to be part of Rwanda’s contingent for the 10th All Africa Games.

The Games are slated to run from September 3-18 in Maputo, Mozambique.
