Editor,

Allow me to respond to Nadia Bahizi’s letter entitled "Education council has improved varsities’ quality” The NewTimes, May, 27.

Over the years, the quality of our education has improved and universities now produce competent graduates able to compete for top jobs within the region.

Indeed, this has been possible following the establishment of the Council for Higher Education.

The council has already taken commendable steps in regulating and setting up a firm education foundation that in turn promotes basic education.

The requirements are tight and universities that have not met the standards from the council have closed down.

I am certain that the regulatory body would continue to put universities under pressure to produce graduates that can support the socio-economic development of our country.

Like Bahizi suggested, let us support the council to uphold high quality so that our graduates compete for jobs in Africa and beyond.

Besides, I support the Education ministry’s idea that boards of directors at all institutions of higher learning play an active role in improving the quality of education.
