It was an action-packed weekend full of shocking results on match day 22 as bottom-placed side Espoir FC surprised AS Kigali 1-0 in Rusizi while struggling Musanze also recorded their first victory in the second round of the league in grand style after beating Gasogi 2-1 on Sunday.

The league now promises to be a three-horse race as frontrunners APR, Rayon and Kiyovu each won their respective games convincingly over the weekend.

Times Sport takes a look at five things we learned from Rwanda Premier League.

Mbungo’s job hanging by a thread amid AS Kigali crisis

AS Kigali’s 1-0 shock defeat to bottom-placed Espoir on Sunday not only blew their chances of keeping their title hopes alive but also put Andre Casa Mbungo’s future at the club in jeopardy.

The 2022 Peace Cup winners were leading the league table before the first round ended but they bottled things up, having won just one in their last six league games.

The City of Kigali-sponsored club’s form is going from bad to worse and Mbungo’s employers are running out patience with his job now hanging in the balance.

He could be fired anytime should he not turn results around, with next opponents Rayon Sports likely to decide his fate.

Title race could be decided at the last game

With AS Kigali and Gasogi United now struggling, the league has not become a three-horse race as APR, Rayon and Kiyovu look more serious on the title.

The trio have been outstanding so far with quality football and important results and are only separated by two points between them.

The league title was decided on the last day during the 2021/22 season when APR won the battle against Kiyovu and this season could also go down the same tunnel with the duo and Rayon all hanging on to the silverware.

Twizerimana scoring for fun

After being sacked from Police for misconduct, Onesme Twizerimana has found Gorilla FC as a safe haven and he feels no regret in leaving the law enforcers after rediscovering his scoring boot.

The striker was Police FC’s best player in the first round of the league before he was shown the exit door. He is now enjoying the form of his life at Gorilla for which he has scored five goals in his last five games.

Twizerimana has been vital in Gorilla's recent impressive form as they have effectively moved to safety on the table.

APR FC becoming more and more ruthless

Ben Moussa knows that the race for the title is becoming tight fixture after fixture and, while it could reach a point where the goal difference could be a determining factor, his attack has been ruthless in the club's recent games.

The military side put six past Rutsiro on Saturday, their biggest score line this season. In all, they have netted 13 goals in their last three games conceding just three.

The league leaders have been unstoppable in front of goal and rivals must cope with their pace if they are to challenge them for the title.

Musanze finally back to winning ways

One of the exciting teams in the league’s first round, Musanze slammed into poor form in the second round where they went six games without a victory.

They, however, pulled a magic trick over the weekend as they travelled to Bugesera to end their winless streak after beating Gasogi United 2-1.

The result could certainly become a morale booster for the Northern Province-based side as they hope to build on it to register more wins and end the season on a high.
