HOMEBOY Emmanuel Ruterana rebounded from his early exit in last week’s KCB Golf Tour – Arusha leg in sizzling style after finishing second in yesterday’s opening round of the Kigali leg at Kigali Golf Club.

A little over a week after missing the cut at Gymkhana Golf Course, the 28-year-old fired a bogey-free three-under-par 69.

Making the most of ideal scoring conditions on soft and receptive greens, Ruterana needed only 30 putts before ending the round two strokes adrift of Kenya’s Ali Kimani.
Ruterana was delighted with his start in the four-day event.

"It was one of those days today where the hole just looked big and I putted extremely well,” he said.

"I needed to get off to a good start ... not only to help me get past last week, but also in a tournament that I like a lot here at Kigali Golf Club. I know that I can play well here.”

Asked to compare his confidence level now and last year, he replied: "Fairly high, but at the same time I still need to put four rounds together.”

Compatriot Jean Baptist Hakizimana recovered from a faltering start to settle for a level par-72.

The hard-hitting golfer shot four bogeys on the front nine and a double bogey on the 13th hole but birdies on holes 10, 11, 12, 14, 16 and 18 brought him back into contention.

Kenyans dominated the top five positions with Nicolas Rokoine (70) and David Odhiambo (70) claiming 3rd and 4th position.

Meanwhile, rookies Ernest Ndayisenga and Olivier Munyaneza had a rough outing after carding 74 and 81 respectively.

Only the top 20 will make the cut at the end of today’s round two.
