ARUSHA - The East African Community (EAC) and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), have resolved to harmonise their activities.

This was decided recently in a meeting between the EAC Secretary General, Dr. Richard Sezibera and the ICGLR Executive Secretary, Liberata Mulamula, when she paid him a visit at the EAC Headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.

"The experts of the two organisations are expected to meet to prepare a plan of action and review progress after every six months as provided in the MoU,” an ICGLR statement quotes them as resolving.

Mulamula said she was upbeat that the ICGLR and EAC relationship would be strengthened further, considering that Dr. Sezibera was Rwanda’s National Coordinator of the ICGLR when it was launched in 2003.

She briefed the EAC officials on issues of common interest and areas of collaboration with ICGLR including issues of peace and security, good governance, food security, gender based violence and non-aggression and mutual defense programs, among others.

Dr. Sezibera reiterated his support for ICGLR and committed to promote cooperation between the two organisations to a higher level.

The EAC five partner states are members of the ICGLR framework.
