Amahoro Stadium is undergoing a remarkable transformation with the expansion project being undertaken by Turkish construction company SUMMA JV Rwanda which also constructed BK Arena.

It will cost the government in excess of Rwf160 billion to successfully complete the upgrade of the multi-purpose facility whose initial capacity is expected to increase from 25,000 to 45,000 seats upon completion, making it the biggest stadium in the country.

Unlike other stadiums that are demolished to build new ones, SUMMA is maintaining the existing structure and building on it to expand its capacity.

The works will entail expansion at different wings of the stadium and some additional roofing that will shield spectators from extreme weather conditions and also give them comfort.

Upon completion in June 2024, the facility is expected to host not only international football matches but also concerts and public events.

When Times Sport visited the construction site last week, workers were seen assembling steel structures while others were using truck machines making concrete chairs. The existing seats have not been replaced yet.

On the pitch, workers are also seen digging holes and laying soil sand and stones, shaping and strengthening the ground.

An official from SUMMA told Times Sport that the company employs more than 2,100 workers in the construction, with about 95 per cent being Rwandans.

The expansion of the Stadium is expected to significantly enhance the comfort and experience of spectators, and contribute to the growth of sports and entertainment in the country.
