KIGALI - The visiting new Commandant of the US Africa Command (USAFRICOM), has commended the Rwanda Defence Forces (RDF) for their professionalism in executing their peacekeeping duties.

Gen Carter Ham, who was in Rwanda for his first visit following his appointment in March, said this after meeting with top defence officials.

He met Defence Minister, James Kabarebe, and Chief of Defence Staff Lt Gen Charles Kayonga.

Ham hadearlier visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre where he paid respect to victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

According to a statement, the American General discussed with his Rwandan counterparts areas of cooperation, especially training.

They discussed how the US can help in the establishment of a senior military academy and a School of Excellence for Non-Commissioned Officers.

Gen Ham also urged Rwandans to help the new state of Southern Sudan in the reconstruction process.
